The narration style uses multiple third person narration, switching point of view between three main characters, Jason, Piper, and Leo. Themes include courage, family, friendship, identity, fate versus free will, good versus evil, and the superhero trope.

Jason has amnesia, and cannot remember anything, including his girlfriend, Piper, or his best friend, Leo. On a field trip to the Grand Canyon with his school for troubled kids, storm spirits summoned by their classmate Dylan, attack Jason and his friends.

Jason pulls out a coin that turns into a magical sword and attacks the spirits, all the while not knowing what he is doing. Coach Gleeson Hedge, the counsellor, is actually a satyr, and jumps to defend and protect his students.

The storm spirits kidnap him and disappear. Percy is not there, but Annabeth takes the trio to Camp Half-Blood, a Greek demigod training facility, where it is revealed that all three of them are demigods: Leo is a son of Hephaestus, and has the rare ability to control fire; Piper is a daughter of Aphrodite, and has the power to charmspeak people, convincing them to do whatever she wants.

Chiron the centaur tells him he is in danger; they discover that Jason can suddenly speak Latin, and that he is a son of Zeus. Jason still cannot remember much, but realises that Thalia, a Hunter of Artemis, is his sister.

Prophecies reveal that the trio must rescue Hera. She was kidnapped by Gaea the earth mother, who has sinister plans to overthrow the Gods. An epic quest ensues. For transportation, Leo fixes a magic robot dragon. First, on the advice of Annabeth, they must ask Aeolus, the master of the winds, to help them find Hera.
